Frequently Asked Questions, with answers!
What can I expect at a photo session?
You can expect to have fun! Because each photo session is unique, we’ll have a consultation prior to the session, usually a week or two before the shoot. This will give you a good sense of what to expect and you can relax and enjoy being photographed. Most sessions last between 1-3 hours, depending on the number of family members and the age of the child(ren) being photographed. Once the photo session is complete, I review the images and select the best to hand process, usually between 20-30 images.
What makes van der Valk Photography different from department store portrait studios?
It’s true, generic portrait studios are usually less expensive. Sessions are relatively short and you are given little choice in poses and props. Your photos may end up being “cookie-cutter” and not represent the “real” you. By choosing a professional photographer you are making an investment in your photos. When you chose to work with van der Valk Photography you are choosing to work with an artist – I want to get to know you so I can capture your uniqueness and the “real” moments that take place during our session. You also benefit from expert hand processing of each image. In about two weeks you’ll receive between 20-30 images – this is much more than you’ll receive from a generic alternative.
What time of day is best to schedule our photo session?
There is no one answer to this question, since lighting changes based on season, location, and of course, time of day. During our pre-session consult we will discuss what will work best for your unique photo shoot.
What should I wear?
For group and family photo sessions, try to coordinate styles and colours rather than try to match. Keep your style as natural as possible and reflective of your personality. It’s important to avoid busy patterns that may distract from the subject’s face.
What should I have available at our session?
Since I take a journalistic approach to my work, I don’t usually include props in photos unless you request them. And then, in keeping with my style I typically only use items found in your home. This way I can capture you and your loved ones in ‘everyday’ scenarios, just hanging out together rather than traditional posing. Of course, if there is something in particular you’d like to use for a specific pose then we can discuss this at our consultation.
What if there are more than 30 great pictures from my photo session?
If there are more than 30 images from your session that meets my high standards I will post thumbnail versions of all the images in a private online viewing gallery where you will be able to select the 30 images that are included in your package and then have the option to purchase additional photos for $15 per image.
I’d like to capture memories of my pregnancy; when is the best time to have my maternity photos taken?
In my experience, maternity sessions that produce the best results are scheduled between 30-36 weeks. Though, contact me early to ensure I’m available during this window of opportunity.
What is the best age to have pictures taken of my newborn? Is there an outfit that works best?
Newborns photograph best within the first 2 weeks of age. I typically photograph infants in their bare skin, though a favourite outfit works nicely if it’s not too bulky. We can tentatively book this session prior to the birth of your little one to ensure my availability, and then adjust our dates as needed.
Why don’t I receive every photo you take during the session?
Most professional portrait photographers offer between 20 and 30 final images. But beyond this, the photos I shoot are more than just images of you and your loved ones; they’re pieces of art and reflect my reputation. For this reason you’ll receive only those images that meet my high standards. These are professionally hand processed, resulting in impressive pieces of artwork that you will cherish for years to come.
What is involved in ‘hand processing’ images?
This is an industry term that describes the method in which photos are reviewed and touched-up. Most importantly, regardless of the processing you will look like you. I don’t airbrush photos, but rather I might make minor adjustments to colour and lighting, and ensure the subject’s complexion and skin tone is flattering.
Why didn’t our final images include some of the actions/poses/etc. that I know were taken during our session?
Not every photo or pose turns out as intended or meets my standards. However, prior to or during the session if there is a particular shot you like, just let me know and I’ll spend a little extra time to ensure we both get what we’re looking for. I encourage you to let me know what you’re looking for or what you like. Our photo session is very interactive so please ask questions, make suggestions and, of course, be yourself!
What equipment do you use?
I shoot using a Canon 5d MKII digital camera and have an array of lenses to accommodate a wide variety of photo sessions. I also have flash and backdrop equipment for those who request a more traditional photo shoot or for situations requiring additional lighting.
Why do the web versions of my photos have a watermark?
I include a watermark on the web versions of your photos to help deter unauthorized use. I provide web versions as a helpful courtesy so you can more easily post your photos on your Facebook page or email to friends and family; and since you have the print quality originals, you can easily reduce the file size for web should you prefer not to have the watermark on your photo.
