House for sale in East Sooke. Pim Head Road.
Posted by admin in Latest News,Photographs | May 9, 2012Local Sooke Realtor, Oliver Katz with DFH Realty asked me to take photos of this gorgeous waterfront property in East Sooke, west of Victoria, BC on Vancouver Island. Tucked away amongst the trees on a hill sloping down to the waterfront, this beautiful property has expansive views of the Sooke Basin. When I started to take the photos the tide was really low and I could see 2 Heron’s walking around the water in search of tasty morsals that the ebbing tide had left behind.
This house has a really nice living space that is open, large amounts of windows and a large wood vaulted ceiling.
I loved the way the property felt like you were millions of miles from nowhere and had a very peaceful and tranquil feeling to it.

Wrangled my camera to the top floor of Mariner’s Village in Sooke, BC to try my hand at capturing the Super Moon tonight which rose over East Sooke.
With 5d set on tripod and shutter release, I captured a few exposures of the super moon with my 300mm lens.
Here is the resulting image as seen over the treeline in East Sooke.
Yesterday we set up a glamour style head shot for Kari, which was a lot of fun. I used a clam shell lighting set-up with one speedlight reflecting off a white ceiling, bounced into a reflector below her head and a sunlight continuous light above her lighting down. Also had a large window camera left helping to light us as well.
Spent 30 minutes with her in various poses and joked around. She was a rockstar and ended up with many keepers.
Thanks, Kari! You look wonderful.
Real Estate Property Shoot on Kaltasin Rd. in Sooke
Posted by admin in Latest News,Photographs | May 2, 2012Local Realtor, Marlene Arden, contact me to shoot a new waterfront listing for her. This 1.8 acre waterfront single family home is situated on a very nice piece of property with 180 feet of beach overlooking the Sooke Basin. Lovely gardens, pond and palm trees surround this home. Inside is very well kept and has a gorgeous kitchen/living room with great views overlooking the ocean.
I love shooting properties like this and can only dream one day of owing something as nice as this piece of land.
I shot well over 30 photos of this property and I’ve put together just a small sample for you to see. To learn more about this listing on Marlene’s website, please click here.
A friend of mine was looking for a new head shot for personal use. He wasn’t looking for clean lighting but opted for something a little more gritty with shadows, something mysterious.
We used a large garage with a large panel of diffused glass windows for the garage door, which gave us the light I was looking for. We ran out of time as he had to leave and we had one shot at this. This was the only photo that I took in this location and I think it’s probably the best of them, just the tone and feeling he was looking for.
Here is a daytime exterior photo of corner lot #1 in the new, green built, Woodland Creek Development in the heart of Sooke, BC on Vancouver Island.
This is a gorgeous rancher with a great yard and nice wood fence.
The clouds were a drab and the light was a little harsh being in the mid-afternoon. I opted to put on my 10 stop ND filter which allowed me to get a 30 second shutter speed which gave some nice lights and movement to the clouds.
From that photo I rendered 3 separate exposed frames and developed them in my processing software of choice.
Woodland Creek Developer and Builder Photos
Posted by admin in Latest News,Photographs | April 18, 2012The owners of Totangi Properties who are developing Woodland Creek in Sooke, BC were asked to provide a group shot of themselves and builder Steve Smith from SC Smith Building for an online article by BC Hydro featuring their new green development near Victoria in the heart of Sooke.
We tried a bunch of locations and settled on the property of one of the completed homes, standing on the grass. I chose to kneel down for this shot for a couple of reasons. I wanted them to appear full body in the shot and wanted to get the house in, so that required the use of a wide lens plus low angle and I also wanted the viewer to look up to them, allowing their presence to be larger and stronger. I put on my flash for this shot to evenly light the group.
We also tried a location inside a current build between the framing of the house which worked out nicely. Using one large window to camera left allowed me to get some great light and shadow, showing the depth of their faces. While I did have to bump the ISO up quite a bit in order to achieve these photos, the images turned out well. I love natural light.
I was contacted again to shoot an exterior photo of a newly completed home at Woodland Creek in Sooke, BC near Victoria on Vancouver Island. Totangi Properties is the developer behind Woodland Creek, a well-built, gorgeous single family homes in Sooke, BC. It’s always a pleasure shooting the interior and exterior of these homes as they make my work easy. It’s not hard to shoot something nice.

I was contacted by local Reator, Oliver Katz to shoot an oceanfront East Sooke property. On the phone he said I would like shooting this house, but he didn’t get into much detail. The next day I arranged a time with the owners and drove across the pond from Sooke to this lovely home in East Sooke.
Oliver was right. What a beauty of a home. I instantly noticed a rather large custom stained glass window and lots of wood and trees, fantastic gardens and that ocean air smell so familiar when near the sea.
Walking through the large wooden front door the first thing that stood out was this large wooden, spiral staircase.
Very nice. The tile pattern reminded me of a Spanish decor and directly in front of me was a large panel of windows overlooking the shores of Sassenos and the Sooke Basin and Sooke hills in the distance. What an absolute stunning view, some of the best I’ve seen from this side.
Everything about this house was awesome. Each room was uniquely done. This study/den looked so cozy and inviting, overlooking the backyard and gardens.
Next, I entered the kitchen. Keeping with the decor, this was a great looking kitchen which also had wonderful views of the ocean. What I wouldn’t give to be able to cook dinner here with a glass of wine overlooking the sea.
But it gets better. Check out this view from the dining room and living room. WOW!
With a wood fireplace against one of the walls (Not seen here), imagine enjoying a book and glass of wine here. What a place to have friends over and enjoy.
And another view of the cool staircase leading downstairs to an in-law suite.
Thanks again to local Sooke Realtor Oliver Katz for asking me to shoot this wonderful west coast home. What a treat this was!
